We built this page by running the effect ourselves, twice, and the first attempt is the useful part: asking a model for a frightened person produced something that read as mild surprise. Wide eyes and an open mouth are shared by shock, awe and fear — what makes it fear is the recoil, the raised inner brows and the hands coming up. The preset prompt here names all three.
Both were generated on this page's engine from the same source photo — a bearded man in a grey t-shirt against a plain wall. Every output is AI-generated, so yours will differ; what transfers is the lesson about wording.
The prompt named the inner eyebrows pulling up and together, the head recoiling back with the chin tucking down, the shoulders hunching, and hands rising defensively toward the chest — plus real fear, not surprise. The clip lands there: the brows go up in the middle, the hands come up open at chest height, and the body closes rather than opening out. Same grey t-shirt, same wall, camera still.
Open the video studioThe first attempt asked for eyes widening in fear, breath catching, head shrinking back — reasonable wording, and not enough. What came back was a startle: wide eyes, open mouth, a slightly wary look at the end, no recoil and no hands. It is not a bad clip, it is the wrong emotion, and it is exactly the failure this page exists to save you from.

Yes, ideally. A neutral, front-facing photo with a little space above the head gives the model room for the recoil. A photo already smiling means the model spends the first frames travelling out of the smile.
We would not. A clip of a real child in apparent fear is the kind of thing that gets sent on without context, and the effect works just as well on an adult. Consider the [laughing effect](/video/ai-laughing-face-effect) instead for family photos.
