Making a manga used to have one gatekeeper: you had to draw. The story, the paneling instincts, the character voices — none of it mattered until your hands could execute it. That gate is now optional. This guide walks the full pipeline for how to make a manga in 2026 — script, characters, panels, lettering, assembly — using AI for the drawing while keeping the parts that actually make manga work in human hands.

What AI changes about making a manga — and what it doesn't

Be clear-eyed about the split. AI image models are now genuinely good at manga drawing: character sheets, expressive faces, screentone shading, dramatic ink work. They are still bad at the things that make a manga readable — panel-to-panel continuity, consistent character identity across dozens of images, and paneling rhythm. So the honest division of labor:

  • You own: story, script, page layouts, panel flow, dialogue, pacing.
  • AI owns: rendering individual panels from your descriptions.
  • You share: character consistency — solvable, but only with the reference-image technique below.

Every "one-click manga generator" that promises to skip your half produces the same thing: pretty pages that read like a shuffled deck. The pipeline below takes longer than one click and produces something you can actually hand to a reader.

Step 1 — Script the manga before pictures, always

Write the manga chapter as text first: scene descriptions, dialogue, and a one-line note of what each panel must show. The professional format is simpler than it sounds:

Three panels, three camera choices, one beat. Deciding this on paper costs minutes; deciding it inside an image generator costs a generation per guess.

Step 2 — Lock your manga characters with reference images

Character drift is the failure mode that kills AI manga more than any other. The fix is mechanical: generate each main character once as a clean reference sheet — front view, neutral light, plain background — and then feed that image into every panel generation using image-to-image mode, with the panel prompt describing pose and emotion while the reference holds the identity.

Iterate until the face is right — this is the one step where perfectionism pays, because every panel inherits it. Step 3 — Generate manga panels, not pages

Resist the urge to prompt an entire page at once. Models handle one manga panel's worth of content well and start improvising layout, gutters and phantom speech bubbles when asked for full pages. Generate panel by panel, at the aspect ratio each slot needs — wide establishing shots, tall dramatic verticals, square close-ups.

A manga panel prompt that works carries five parts: style anchor, character (with reference image), action, camera, and tone. For example: "Black and white manga panel, screentone shading — the boy from the reference image sprints down a rain-slicked street at night, low camera angle looking up, motion speed-lines, dramatic contrast."

Style consistency across panels comes from repeating the same style anchor phrase verbatim in every prompt. Write it once, paste it everywhere: something like "black and white manga style, sharp ink lines, screentone shading, high contrast." Vary the content; never vary the anchor.

Step 4 — Leave the manga speech bubbles empty

Prompt every panel with "no text, no speech bubbles." AI-generated manga lettering is reliably mangled, and baked-in bubbles cannot be repositioned when your dialogue changes. Add bubbles and text in the assembly step, where they belong — real manga lettering is a layout craft, and even free tools handle it better than any image model.

A note on style choice

Pick the manga style before generating anything, because it cannot be changed later without redrawing every panel. Classic black-and-white with screentones is the most forgiving — the models have seen enormous amounts of it, and its high contrast hides small rendering flaws. Full-colour webtoon-style vertical strips are equally well-supported but less tolerant: colour drift between panels is much more visible than tone drift.

Step 5 — Assemble the manga pages

Any layout tool works: Clip Studio Paint is the industry standard (and its bubble tools are excellent), but Canva or even slide software will assemble manga panels, gutters and bubbles for a first chapter. Two layout rules carry most of the craft: keep gutters consistent (thin horizontal, thicker vertical, or the reverse — just pick one), and check reading order on every page by squinting — if the eye's path is ambiguous, the manga layout is wrong regardless of how good the panels look.

Export pages at high resolution; if a panel comes out soft after scaling, run it through an HD upscale pass before final assembly.

Step 6 — The manga consistency audit

Before calling a manga chapter done, do one pass reading only for continuity: hair length, uniform details, the side a scar sits on, background weather. Fix the worst offenders by re-generating those panels with the reference image and a more explicit prompt. Perfect consistency is not achievable with today's models — published-manga-grade consistency is not the bar for a first chapter anyway. Readable and improving is.

What making a manga with AI costs

A 20-page manga chapter at five panels per page is roughly 100 generations plus perhaps 40 retries. Can AI make a whole manga by itself?
It can produce manga-styled images endlessly; it cannot yet produce a story told in sequential panels without a human doing the sequencing. The script and layout steps above are not optional overhead — they are the manga.

How do I keep the same face across 100 panels?
Reference-image conditioning, every single panel, plus the verbatim style anchor. Accept small drift; fix large drift by re-rolling with a tighter prompt. This is the highest-effort part of the pipeline and the one that most distinguishes finished work from AI slop.

What about publishing AI-drawn manga?
Platform policies differ and are moving: some accept AI-assisted work with disclosure, others prohibit it. Check the specific platform before you build a publication plan on it, and disclose honestly — the audience backlash against undisclosed AI art is a bigger practical risk than the policies.

Is this "real" manga-making?
