The test for a chart is whether somebody could sit down and work it. That means whole squares, a countable palette, and colour changes that land on stitch boundaries — three constraints a photo filter has no reason to respect.
Two finished pieces where the square structure is doing the work. Look at the edges of the shapes first — that is where a real chart shows its stepped, blocky boundary and a filtered photo shows a smooth curve. Every output is AI-generated, so treat these as what the conversion aims at rather than results you will get back identically.

Chart something simple
More colours, but the shading is still assembled from complete squares rather than blended. That constraint is what keeps it stitchable at a larger count.

A counted design of this kind is a grid where each cell holds exactly one thread colour. That sounds trivial and it is where almost every conversion fails: photographs contain smooth gradients, and a gradient rendered onto a grid produces a different colour in every adjacent square, which is unstitchable in practice and unreadable as a chart.
So the useful conversion does two things at once — it quantises the image to a grid at a stitch count you can actually work, and it collapses the palette to a countable number of threads, accepting flat areas where the photo had subtle shading. Two honest limits. This produces a picture of the finished piece, not a symbol chart with DMC numbers — a stitcher still reads colours off the image. And fine detail below one stitch simply disappears, exactly as it would on real cloth.

A flower, an animal, a letter, a simple silhouette. Faces at small counts turn to mush for the same reason they do on real cloth — there are not enough squares to hold the detail.

"Twelve colours" produces something crisp and old-fashioned. "Forty colours" produces something closer to the photo and much harder to stitch. The number is the single biggest lever you have.

A pet, a house, a wedding date. The subject matters more than the technique, and the stepped grid is what makes it read as handmade rather than printed. The same instinct drives free-form embroidery, which trades the grid for stitch direction.
What people ask before they buy thread.
No. What you get is an image of the finished piece with the grid and the whole-square structure visible, which is enough to read colours and count squares from. A symbol chart with DMC numbers is a different kind of file, and this does not produce one.
Twelve to twenty for something that looks like traditional needlework and is realistic to stitch. Beyond about forty you are asking for a photograph rendered on a grid — it will look impressive on screen and be miserable to work from.
Because there were not enough squares to hold it. Faces need a high count to survive, and at low counts the features land inside single squares and vanish. Ask for a finer cloth, or pick a subject with bigger shapes.
Yes, and it changes more than you would expect. The cloth shows through every gap between stitches, so a design on black even-weave reads completely differently from the same design on white aida.
The grid logic is similar, which is why pixel art conversion shares some of the same thinking, but the constraints are not: this craft has a physical thread palette, a visible cloth weave between cells, and the X of each stitch as texture. Pixels have none of those.
Only in your own history, so you can rerun the same subject at a different thread count. It travels over HTTPS, is never used to advertise, and deleting a chart removes the source photo with it.
