How we made it

Edit one thing in a photo with Nano Banana 2.1

The harbour edit at the top of this page, in four moves.

01

Start from the photo you want to keep

Ours was the sunrise panorama from the prompt cards above. Yours can be any photo.

02

Say the one change

We asked for the same view at blue hour: lit windows, a lamp on the pier, boat cabins on.

03

List what must not move

Every building, boat, trap and mountain, and the framing. Naming them is what kept them.

04

Pick 4K for the keeper

The edit keeps the photo's shape. Ours came back as a full 4K panorama for 35 credits.

What Nano Banana 2.1 is, and what changed from Nano Banana 2

Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026 as the update to Nano Banana 2. It draws from text and edits photos, now up to 4K, with wide frames that no longer tile at 2K and 4K, sharper lettering and steadier faces across a set of reference photos.

What people post about

Three things Nano Banana 2.1 gets right, going by launch-week posts

It knows a snow crab from a king crab

It knows a snow crab from a king crab

@notoro_ai was struck that the model drew both crabs correctly side by side, and suggested trying the same prompt on any other model to see why that is hard.

  • Name the exact species, breed or part
  • Put the two things side by side to compare
  • A plain background keeps the subject readable
Night photography that looks shot, not drawn

Night photography that looks shot, not drawn

Star trails, a dark ridge and one glowing laptop: @kawaidgaf posted this from a first test. On r/GeminiAI, the upvoted reply under another launch post was about the lighting.

  • Say what the camera did: long exposure, phone flash
  • Name the single light source in the scene
  • Ask for a vertical frame for phone wallpapers
Fantasy scenes with real light in them

Fantasy scenes with real light in them

@os_orabi built a ruined temple open to the stars, with one beam of light falling into a turquoise pool.

  • Describe the architecture before the mood
  • Give the light a direction and a source
  • Portrait 3:4 suits tall interiors

Nano Banana 2.1 prompts you can copy

Three prompts we ran the day we added it, word for word.

A 4:1 fjord panorama

A 4:1 fjord panorama

Kavel

Ran at 4:1 and 2K. Left to right, then the light and the lens. It is also the photo the night edit started from.

A wide panoramic photograph of a small Norwegian fishing harbour at sunrise: red and ochre wooden boathouses on stilts along the left, a stone pier with stacked lobster traps in the middle, three moored fishing boats with their reflections in flat calm water, snow-capped mountains across the fjord on the right, low mist on the water and a single gull in flight. Natural colour, sharp detail across the whole frame, shot on a full-frame camera with a 24mm lens.

Kavel

Every line in quotation marks, in the order it should appear. All five lines came back spelled as typed.

A hand-painted wooden menu board outside a small coffee kiosk, photographed straight on in soft morning light. In white chalk-style lettering the board reads exactly: "TODAY'S BREWS" as the heading, then three lines "Flat White $4.50", "Cold Brew $5.00", "Oat Latte $5.25", and at the bottom in smaller letters "Open 7am – 3pm". A potted fern on the left, a paper cup on the ledge, shallow depth of field, photoreal.

A wine glass and a clock at 3:30

Kavel

Clock hands are the classic test image models fail. We named the exact time and got the hands at 3:30.

A wine glass filled right up to the brim with red wine, standing next to a brass alarm clock whose hands show exactly 3:30, on a white table against a soft peach wall. Soft daylight from the left, clean product photo.

Definitely an improvement. Image editing seems to be more consistent and accurate.

Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2

Same family, newer release, and cheaper here: 15 credits at 1K against 20, and 35 at 4K against 45. Nano Banana 2 keeps its own page if you have prompts tuned for it.

vs Nano Banana Pro

Pick Pro if you already like its look for text-only renders. Pick 2.1 to edit your photos or go to 4K, at half Pro's credits for a 1K image.

vs GPT Image 2.5

Launch week was full of same-prompt matchups. For a photo that should look like a photo, this one went to Google.

“Nano Banana just looks better here, the image feels more natural and actually looks like a photo”

In launch week, 2.1 appeared on some accounts and vanished from others. Here the model you pick is the model that runs, at a credit price you see first.

FAQ

Nano Banana 2.1 FAQ

The questions people asked most in the launch-week threads.

Right here: pick Nano Banana 2.1, type or upload, and generate. Google is also rolling it out in the Gemini app, Flow and AI Studio, where some accounts saw it appear and disappear during launch week.

It is 2.1. Choosing Nano Banana 2.1 here runs 2.1 every time, and Nano Banana 2 is a separate choice with its own page.

No. What you type is what the model receives. In the Gemini app a thinking model can reword your prompt first. If a prompt is ever blocked here, you are offered a reworded version and decide whether to use it.

15 credits at 1K, 25 at 2K and 35 at 4K, edits included, shown before you generate. Failed runs are refunded automatically.

You can start free: log in and Kavel adds free credits with no card, which run Kavel's own image engine. This model runs on any paid plan or credit pack, with the cost shown before you generate.

1K, 2K or 4K, at 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2 and 2:3, plus 4:1 and 1:4 panoramas. An edit keeps the shape of the photo you upload.

Google rates it for up to 14 references, with up to four characters kept consistent. This page edits one photo at a time; the full image generator takes up to nine at once.

It depends on the job. Nano Banana 2.1 is newer, half the credits at 1K, goes to 4K and edits photos here; Pro suits you if you already like its look for text-only renders. Run the same prompt on both and keep the better one.

Yes. Put each line in quotation marks and say where it goes, as in the menu board above, where all five lines came back as typed.

Make your first Nano Banana 2.1 image

No waiting for it to reach your account. Type a prompt or upload a photo, pick 1K for 15 credits (5 fewer than Nano Banana 2), 2K for 25 or 4K for 35, and leave with a finished image you can post. A run that errors out on our side gives its credits back.
