The short answer

Which one should you use?

Pick Banana 2 when you are exploring: it costs fewer credits at 1K, and it leans into the visual instructions in a prompt, which is useful when you want the look pushed. Pick Pro when the wait needs to be predictable, or when you want the brief followed rather than interpreted. At matched resolution the two finish in the same ballpark, so speed should not be your deciding factor — which is the opposite of what most write-ups will tell you. Throughout this page, Pro and Banana 2 are the short forms of the two tiers.

Four prompts, both models, run through the same pipeline on 22 July 2026, plus two re-runs with resolution pinned to 2K. Timings are end-to-end and include queue time, so treat them as waiting, not as raw model speed. Single runs, not averages — enough to show a difference this size, not enough to rank them precisely.

How we tested, and what that limits

So you can judge the numbers rather than take them.

  1. Same prompt text, both models

    No per-model prompt tuning. Tuning each one would show what each can peak at; identical text shows how each reads the same instruction.

  2. Resolution pinned to 2K

    Left unset, Banana 2 returns 2048px and Pro returns 1024px. Timing those against each other compares four times the work, which is where the widely repeated speed claims come from.

  3. Timed end to end

    From submit to image, queue included. That is what you actually wait, but it means these are not pure model benchmarks.

  4. Single runs, stated as such

    One image per prompt per model. Enough to show a 7x spread in consistency; not enough to call a 9-second gap meaningful.

Including one that contradicts what most write-ups say.

Default resolutions differ

Unset, Banana 2 produced 2048x2048 and Pro produced 1024x1024 on identical calls. Any comparison at default settings is measuring this, not the models.

Matched settings, matched speed

At 2K the product prompt took Pro 44 seconds and Banana 2 52 — the same ballpark. The gap people report comes from the resolution difference above.

Consistency is the real gap

Across six runs Pro stayed between 43 and 53 seconds. Banana 2 ranged from 52 to 377. Some of that is platform queueing rather than the model, but it is what you wait either way.

Neither is simply more obedient

On the poster prompt Pro stayed inside the brief while Banana 2 added scenery. On the portrait it reversed: Banana 2 executed the lighting instruction and Pro largely skipped it. One sample would have told you the opposite of the other.

Neither wins outright in our testing. At matched 2K resolution they finished in a similar time, and each followed the brief more closely on a different prompt. Pro was steadier run to run; Banana 2 costs fewer credits at 1K, which makes it the better one to explore with. Choose on the job, not on a ranking.

Not meaningfully, once you match the settings. At 2K a product prompt took Pro 44 seconds and Banana 2 52. The much larger gaps you will read about come from comparing default calls, where Banana 2 is quietly rendering four times as many pixels.

On Kavel, Pro is 12 credits at 1K and 2K, 21 at 4K. Banana 2 is 8 credits at 1K, 12 at 2K, 18 at 4K. The cost for your chosen resolution is shown in the generator before you spend anything.

They are two tiers of Google's Banana image family. In our runs the practical differences were consistency of turnaround, default output resolution, and temperament — Banana 2 pushes the visual instructions in a prompt harder and sometimes adds elements, Pro renders more conservatively and keeps fine texture such as skin detail.

Lite is the tier the tool pages on this site use by default, so free users can generate. On our provider it now costs the same as Banana 2 at 1K, so it is a speed and simplicity choice rather than a cheaper one.

New accounts get free credits, and both models run in the same generator, so you can put one prompt through each and compare on your own subject rather than ours.

Because they compare default calls. Left unset, the two tiers return different resolutions — one renders roughly four times as many pixels as the other for the same request. Timing those side by side measures the pixel count, not the model. Once we pinned both to 2K the gap fell to single-digit seconds, which is within the noise of queue time on any shared platform. This is the single most repeated claim about these two models and we could not reproduce it under controlled settings.

Only for differences large enough to survive that. A seven-fold spread in turnaround shows up clearly in six runs; a nine-second gap does not, and we do not present it as one. The reversal we saw on prompt adherence is the useful warning here: on a poster brief one tier stayed inside the instructions while the other added scenery, and on a portrait brief that flipped completely. Anyone publishing a verdict from a single prompt would have stated the opposite of anyone publishing from the other, and both would have sounded confident.

Yes, and it is shown in the generator before you commit. Higher resolutions cost more on both tiers, and the cheaper tier is cheaper only at 1K — at 2K the two cost the same, which is what made a matched-resolution comparison worth running in the first place. If you are iterating on wording rather than finishing an image, staying at 1K is where the saving actually lives.
