One photo, a vintage print

A real instant-print render from this page’s model. Drag the divider to compare the crisp digital original with the retro print. Every output is AI-generated, so your finished picture varies with your photo, your prompt, and the film look you describe — treat this as a preview of what the tool can do, not a fixed result.

AI retro film tool

What is an AI polaroid generator?

Instead of buying film and reshooting a moment that already passed, one of your digital photos comes back as the white-bordered, slightly faded square a film camera would have spat out. You upload a clear picture, describe the film look you want, and the model rebuilds it as a physical-looking print with grain, a warm colour cast, and the blank strip along the bottom.

Image tool

On Kavel the tool runs on the Nano Banana image model, so a finished print arrives in one generation rather than a stack of manual filters.

You start from your uploaded photo — the flow defaults to image-to-image — set the format and the resolution, and the credit estimate updates before you commit; a failed run is refunded automatically (unless it broke the content policy), so trying a second film look costs nothing but time. The result suits a couple turning a trip photo into a keepsake, a creator building a nostalgic feed, or anyone who wants an old-camera feeling from a picture shot on a phone.

And because the same studio also does yearbook film, oil paint, and hand-drawn finishes, one workflow covers a range of looks without a new tool for each. Think of it less as a filter and more as a darkroom on call — with the direction in your hands, and your own moment in the frame.

Framed instant snapshot

Upload one clear photo and the model rebuilds it as a framed instant snapshot with authentic grain and a warm cast.

Era style control

Describe the era you want — sun-bleached, moody, pastel, heavy light leak — and the print follows that brief.

Set the format, check the credit estimate, and generate; a run that fails costs you nothing, so a second look is free to try. A Polaroid is the smallest keepsake here — the 90s yearbook portrait is the same nostalgia at portrait length, and the Christmas card is the Polaroid you actually post to someone.

How to use

Make a retro print in three steps

From one digital photo to a framed instant snapshot, with the cost shown before you commit.

1

Upload a photo

Add one clear picture of the moment you want reprinted. A sharp, well-exposed shot survives the grain and the colour fade best.

2

Describe the film look

Set the era: sun-bleached seventies, moody eighties, a soft pastel fade, a light leak across one corner. Specific direction keeps the print on-brief.

3

Check credits and generate

Confirm the estimate, generate the print, and download it. If a run fails, it is free, so you can adjust and try another era.

Couples & keepsakes

Cards & gifts

Reprint a favourite picture for a card, a scrapbook, or a fridge, and hand someone a moment that feels physical again.

Polaroid generator FAQ

Common questions about turning a photo into a vintage instant print with Kavel.

It rebuilds your picture as a physical object: the image gets a white frame with a blank strip along the bottom, the colour washes toward warm and faded, film grain appears, and the corners soften. The people and the pose stay exactly as you shot them.

No, not to start. Free credits come with the account and a failed run is refunded automatically (unless it broke the content policy). After that, each edit costs credits based on the resolution and the count, and the estimate is shown before you generate.

Yes, and it is a good use of it — a scan that already has some age can take the film treatment convincingly. Very blurry or heavily damaged scans are harder, because the edit adds grain on top of the noise already there.

Yes. A sun-bleached seventies wash, a moody eighties cast, a soft pastel fade, a hard light leak in one corner. Each decade has a look, and naming one gets you far closer than asking for something vaguely vintage.

Not reliably — text is the one thing the model tends to garble. It is safer to leave the strip blank and add the handwriting yourself afterwards, which is what people did with the real thing anyway.

It does, and candid groups read the most convincingly as film. The more faces in the frame, the more it helps to start from a sharp original, because the treatment softens everything a little.

Yes, and it is a different request — say disposable camera and you get the one-use-camera print: a hard on-camera flash that blows out whatever is nearest, deep shadows behind it, a slight green-cyan cast in the midtones, and no white frame. The instant-camera look is soft, warm and framed; the disposable look is harsh, flat-lit and full-bleed. Naming the one you want matters more than any other word in the prompt.

Ask for direct flash at night: the subject lit hard from the front, the background falling off to black a metre behind them, and a little motion blur at the edges. It works best on a photo that was already shot indoors or after dark — starting from a bright daylight picture means the model has to invent the darkness, and invented darkness tends to look painted rather than photographed.

A photo that was already flash-lit. Adding a second synthetic flash on top of a real one double-brightens the same highlights, and skin on the nose and forehead clips to pure white with no detail left to recover. If your original already has that hard front light, ask for the faded film wash instead — it works with the existing lighting rather than fighting it.
