It is not a filter laid over a drawing. The model reads the character — hair, eyes, wardrobe, expression, pose — and re-renders every one of those attributes in the language of a photograph.
The direction matters more than people expect. Turning a photo into a style is subtraction: detail gets thrown away and replaced with a convention, and the convention hides the mistakes. Running it the other way is addition. The drawing does not contain pores, individual hair strands, fabric weave, subsurface warmth under the skin, or the faint asymmetry that every real face has — all of it has to be invented, and invented consistently enough that the result reads as a camera's output rather than a very smooth painting.
Our own run is the pair above. The character went in as flat cel shading with crisp outlines: teal bob, amber eyes, dark red high-collar jacket over a white shirt. What came back keeps all four of those and spends its effort elsewhere — the teal is now separate strands with flyaways catching the window light, the jacket has cotton weave and creases where an elbow has bent it a thousand times, and there are freckles that no illustrator drew.
Drag the divider and check the eye colour first; that is the attribute a weak conversion loses soonest.
Two honest notes about what changes. The background usually will not survive, and it should not — a flat gradient is not a place, so the model puts the person somewhere plausible instead. And the more stylised the source, the more the result is an interpretation: a character drawn with a three-line nose gives the model very little to resolve, so two runs can hand you two different noses.

Hair colour, eye colour and costume are what make the character recognisable — everything else can move a little without breaking it.
Most of the quality is decided by how much of the character the model can see before it starts.

"Photorealistic" on its own lets the model drift. Say the hair colour, say the eye colour, say the garment. Listing them is what stops teal turning brown and a high collar turning into a hoodie somewhere between the drawing and the photograph.
A beautiful photograph of the wrong person is a failed run. Put the two side by side at full size and check the palette before you check the skin — the skin is almost always convincing, and the palette is where conversions quietly go wrong.
Five briefs, and only one of them is curiosity.
You designed them, you have drawn them fifty times, and you want to know what they would look like standing in a kitchen. A photographed version becomes the reference sheet the drawings get checked against.
Before buying a wig and commissioning a jacket, seeing the costume rendered on a real body answers questions a flat drawing cannot — how the collar sits, how the fabric falls, whether that hair colour reads on skin like yours.
Adaptations start with someone arguing about who this character is. A photographed version is a faster argument than a description, and it is the same instinct behind [building a movie poster from a still](/image/ai-movie-poster-generator).
A real face outperforms a drawn one in a feed of drawn ones. Converting the character you already post about gives you an image nobody else in that niche has.
Most people arrive here for this and there is nothing wrong with it. It takes one upload, and the answer is usually stranger and better than what you pictured.
What people check before trusting a conversion.
Because a flat colour gradient is not a place. When the model is asked for a photograph it has to put the person somewhere a camera could have stood, so it builds a room. If you need a specific setting, name it in the prompt — otherwise treat the background as the one element that will not survive the conversion.
Yes, and it should — that is the single most common thing a weak run loses. Teal, lilac and silver all come through as dyed hair on a real head. If a run normalises the colour to something ordinary, say the colour explicitly in the prompt and rerun rather than accepting it.
You can upload whatever you have the right to use, and that is your call to make. Worth knowing: the more famous the character, the more the model has seen fan art of them, and the more the output drifts toward the internet's consensus face rather than your particular drawing. Original characters convert closer to the source.
Because the drawing under-specifies a face. Anime convention reduces the nose to a mark and the jaw to a curve, so the model is resolving genuine ambiguity rather than copying — and it resolves it differently each time. Hair, eyes and wardrobe stay stable across runs; bone structure is the part that moves.
Not on this page. Photo-to-style is a different job with a different failure mode, and it has its own tools here — the Pixar-style filter and the caricature generator both take your photograph as the input instead.
