Wan 3.0: What's Actually Released (and What's Rumor)

Wan 3.0 has not been released. As of 6 August 2026 there is no Wan 3.0 model card, no weights, no API endpoint and no announcement from Alibaba — despite a widely shared post claiming it ships today.

Wan 3.0 does not exist yet. Alibaba's current release is Wan 2.7, launched 7 April 2026 (video) and 1 April 2026 (image). Every "Wan 3.0 spec sheet" circulating right now — 60B parameters, native 4K, 30-second clips, Apache 2.0 weights — traces back to unsourced posts and keyword-built sites, not to Alibaba. The open-weight claim is the easiest to check and the least likely: Alibaba has not open-weighted a flagship Wan video model since Wan 2.2 in July 2025.

Is Wan 3.0 out?

No. We checked every channel Alibaba actually uses to ship a model, on 6 August 2026:

wan.video, the official product site, fronts "Introducing Wan 2.7".
Alibaba Cloud Model Studio documents wan2.7-t2v, wan2.7-i2v, wan2.7-r2v and wan2.7-videoedit. Nothing above 2.7 exists in the model list.
The Wan-Video GitHub organisation holds Wan2.1, Wan2.2 and the ecosystem repos. There is no Wan3.0 repository.
The Wan-AI HuggingFace organisation stops at Wan2.2 variants plus specialised models.
Official X accounts (@Alibaba_Wan, @Ali_TongyiLab) have posted nothing announcing a 3.0.
No third-party host carries it either — fal.ai and Replicate both top out at Wan 2.7.

That is six independent places a real launch would have to appear, and it appears in none of them.

Where the Wan 3.0 rumour came from

The specific claim going around is that Alibaba ships Wan 3.0 today, as a 60B mixture-of-experts model with open weights, native 4K and 30-second clips.

It traces to an X post with no source attached. It circulates alongside a cluster of sites built around the phrase itself — the one currently ranking first for it is an exact-match domain four months old, and these sites cite each other rather than Alibaba. On Reddit the mood is more sceptical; r/StableDiffusion threads have been explicitly flagging that Wan 3.0 "doesn't officially exist yet" and warning about rumour inflation promising 4K and longer clips.

Why the open-weight claim is the weakest part

This is the detail worth dwelling on, because it is checkable and almost everyone repeating it has it backwards.

Alibaba genuinely did open-weight the early Wan models under Apache 2.0 — that is why the line has the reputation it has. But that stopped over a year ago. Wan 2.1 (February 2025) and Wan 2.2 (July 2025) shipped downloadable weights. Wan 2.5-Preview, Wan 2.6 and Wan 2.7 are all API-only. Three consecutive flagship releases, thirteen months, no weights.

Alibaba has never published a commitment that future flagship Wan releases stay open. The open-source pressure is real — GitHub issues and Reddit threads asking "is the era of open-source WAN models over?" have been running since 2.5 — but pressure is not a roadmap. A rumour that Wan 3.0 arrives with Apache 2.0 weights is not just unsourced; it runs against everything Alibaba has actually done since mid-2025.

The open-weight break is much clearer as a timeline. Ecosystem models (S2V, Animate, Dancer) have continued to ship open — it is specifically the flagship video line that closed.

What Wan 2.7 actually does

While the rumour cycle argues about a model nobody has, the shipping one is genuinely capable. From Alibaba Cloud's own documentation:

Resolution: 720P or 1080P
Duration: 2 to 15 seconds
Frame rate: 30 fps, MP4 out
Audio: generated in the same pass as the picture, including lip-sync, rather than dubbed on afterwards
Modes: text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-to-video, and instruction-based video editing
Consistency: up to five characters held consistent across a sequence
Control: natural-language direction over camera moves, actions, dialogue and style, with multi-shot storyboards from a single prompt

Alibaba's official API pricing runs roughly 0.6 CNY per second at 720P and about 1 CNY per second at 1080P, billed on output duration.

What we found running it ourselves

We wired Wan 2.7 up on 6 August 2026 and put a job through it end to end, which turned up two things worth knowing before you go looking for it elsewhere.

The first is that it works and it is quick: a 2-second 720p text-to-video job returned in 47 seconds, at 1280x720 with an audio track present, no queue.

The second is a trap worth flagging:

One major aggregator lists Wan 2.7 video on its public pricing page at 25-33% below what we pay elsewhere — and every one of its video model IDs returns "Model not found" when actually called. Only its image endpoints resolve. A model on a reseller's price list is not evidence the reseller can serve it. Worth remembering the day a real Wan 3.0 lands and the same pricing pages fill up with it.

The features people are attributing to 3.0 mostly already shipped

Read the rumoured feature list next to what 2.6 and 2.7 already did and the overlap is striking. Multi-shot narrative arrived in 2.6. Reference-to-video with voice and identity arrived in 2.6. Synchronised audio arrived in 2.5. Director-level camera control and video editing arrived in 2.7. The genuinely new items in the rumour are resolution and clip length — the two numbers easiest to invent and hardest to check.

When might Wan 3.0 actually land?

This section is inference, not information. Alibaba has published no roadmap, teaser or statement about a successor to 2.7. What follows is pattern-reading, and it is worth exactly what pattern-reading is worth.

The gaps between recent releases have been short:

2.1 → 2.2: about five months
2.2 → 2.5-Preview: three and a half months
2.5 → 2.6: one month
2.6 → 2.7: three and a half months
2.7 → today: four months and counting

That makes the current quiet stretch the second-longest the line has had, behind only the five months between 2.1 and 2.2.

So a next release in the second half of 2026 would be unsurprising. Whether it is called 3.0, whether it opens its weights, and what it can do are all unknown, and anyone publishing those numbers today is guessing.

How to use Wan while Wan 3.0 waits

One practical prompting note that applies to any of the current video models — describe the camera and the subject as two separate statements:

Fused: "a dramatic sweeping shot of a man running" leaves the model to guess which half matters.
Split: "the camera tracks left at waist height; the man runs toward the treeline" gives it two instructions it can satisfy independently.
Keep the first attempt short. Length bills linearly, so test the motion at 2 to 3 seconds before committing to 15.

Has Wan 3.0 been released?

No. As of 6 August 2026 there is no official Wan 3.0. Alibaba's product site features Wan 2.7, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio documents the wan2.7 model family and nothing newer, the Wan-Video GitHub organisation and the Wan-AI HuggingFace organisation both stop at Wan 2.2 plus separate ecosystem models, and no official Alibaba account has announced a successor.

Why do so many sites list Wan 3.0 specifications?

Because the term gets searched and the traffic is worth something. The figures being quoted — parameter counts, maximum clip lengths, licence terms — do not trace to any Alibaba source. Several of the sites publishing them are exact-match domains built around the phrase, citing one another rather than a model card.

Will Wan 3.0 be open source?

Unknown, and the rumour that it will is working against the evidence. Alibaba open-weighted Wan 2.1 and Wan 2.2 under Apache 2.0, then shipped Wan 2.5-Preview, Wan 2.6 and Wan 2.7 as API-only. That is three consecutive closed flagship releases. Alibaba has made no public commitment either way.

What is the newest Wan model I can actually use?

Wan 2.7, in two parts: the image model released 1 April 2026 and the video model on 7 April 2026. Both are available through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, through wan.video, and through third-party platforms including this one.

Is Wan 2.6 or Wan 2.7 better for video?

The newer generation adds instruction-based video editing, director-level camera control and storyboarding from a single prompt. Wan 2.6 introduced reference-to-video and multi-shot narrative, both of which 2.7 keeps. If you are choosing today, 2.7 is the current flagship.

How long are Wan 2.7 clips?
