Print-on-demand sellers keep asking the same question in r/EtsySellers and r/printondemand: how do you make a t-shirt mockup that does not look like a sticker? The answer is almost never "a better mockup template". It is four physical details a buyer's eye checks without knowing it:
- The print follows the folds. Real ink bends where the cotton bends. A mockup where the logo stays perfectly flat across a wrinkle reads as pasted on.
- There is a contact shadow. A shirt on a mannequin or a table casts a soft shadow where it touches. No shadow, no weight.
- The scale is right. A chest print on an adult tee is usually a fraction of the chest width. A mockup logo that runs armpit to armpit tells the buyer nothing about what arrives.
- The light matches the room. Flat, shadowless light is what makes a mockup look like software.
What "realistic" means to an Etsy buyer
For a buyer, a realistic mockup is one that matches the package they open: colour of the blank, size of the print, where it sits on the chest. A photoreal mockup that gets the blank colour wrong is worse than a plain mockup that gets it right, because it earns a return instead of a sale.
How to generate a realistic shirt mockup with AI, step by step

- Upload the design as a transparent PNG. A clean cut-out gives the model nothing to misread; if the source is soft, the HD photo converter sharpens it first. Add a photo of the blank shirt as a second image if you have the exact blank you sell.
- Clause 1: placement and size. "Centre the print on the chest, about a third of the chest width."

- Small text softens. Re-run with "keep every letter exactly as uploaded", and keep type large in the source file.
- The print ignores the folds. Write "printed into the fabric, bending with the folds" instead of "on the shirt".

Photoroom puts the shirt on an AI fashion model
Photoroom leans into apparel on people: AI Fashion Models, Ghost Mannequin and Flat Lay are all listed tools, and Pro starts at $7.50 a month billed yearly ($12.99 month to month) with 8,000 AI credits, per its pricing page on 2026-09-15. For the same move on your own model photo, Kavel's AI clothes swap dresses a person in your garment.
Placeit is the mockup template library
Placeit's own pricing text: $14.95 a month or $89.69 a year for "all of Placeit's mockups, design templates, videos, and logos" (read 2026-09-15). It has dedicated POD, t-shirt and "AI-made mockups" categories. The trade-off: every other subscriber can use the same mockup photo.
Mockey gives free downloads on a 30,000-template library
Mockey says its free plan lets you "design 30k+ mockups, upload designs, and download them for free", and lists a $7-a-month Starter plan on its own blog (both read 2026-09-15).
CatalogX and WearView put the garment on an AI model
CatalogX starts free with 5 credits and no card, then ₹299 a month billed in USD for 15 credits; WearView's Lite plan lists $24 and $29 a month for 50 credits with "zero watermarks" (both pricing pages read 2026-09-15).
Drop Studio charges 1 credit per AI mockup and nothing for placement

Recraft's free images are public and owned by Recraft
