Most free AI image generators no longer publish the numbers that every roundup quotes. We opened nine image-generation pricing pages on August 31, 2026, and five of the nine state no free image allowance at all — including Recraft, whose own plan data calls it simply "Limited free credits."
Five of nine no longer print a number. Google, Adobe, Canva, Microsoft and Recraft all give away free image generation and none of them says how much. Any list quoting "25 image credits a month" for Adobe Firefly is quoting a page Adobe no longer serves.
Ideogram's free image credits are weekly, not daily. Its own table says slow credits: weekly for eligible accounts — two hedges in five words.
Leonardo is the most generous image number you can verify: 150 fast tokens a day, refreshing daily, on the free plan.
Krea publishes an image number too: 100 units per day.
The real price of a free image is ownership, not quota. On Recraft's free plan, images "are owned by Recraft," are publicly visible in the community gallery, and are not licensed for commercial use. Leonardo's free plan sets creations access to Public. Ideogram's free column has a dash under private generations.

Read the "how we checked" column before you trust a row. Every image figure above came off the vendor's own page on that date, and where the page gave no number we wrote no number given rather than importing one from somebody else's list.
The image number free AI image generators no longer publish
Five of the nine free AI image generators here decline to say what a free image is worth. Four of those five are run by companies with a market cap; the fifth is a startup that ships a whole feature list without the one number the feature list is about.
Adobe's plans page is the clearest case. It says: "You don't need a plan to get free daily generations across image, video, and audio, with access to popular models like Nano Banana... Limits refresh every day." That is the whole disclosure. The paid rows on the same page are precise to the credit — 2,000, 4,000, 10,000, 50,000 credits per month. The free row has no row.
Canva does the same in a footnote: paid plans get "a shared AI allowance across Standard, Premium and Ultra AI, while Free includes a shared allowance across Standard and Premium AI only." So the free tier is a share of an unstated pool, and it cannot reach the top models at all.
Recraft is the one that makes the pattern obvious, because it is not a giant. Its free-plan feature list runs to ten entries — 3 generations per style per day, basic editing tools, the style library, "Recraft models only", "All images are public", "No commercial use" — and where the credit figure should be it says, literally, "Limited free credits." Ten specifics and one blank, and the blank is the number you came for.
An unstated limit can be lowered on a Tuesday with no changelog. That is the point of not stating it — and it is why confident free-image numbers in most roundups go stale within a quarter.
What other lists of free AI image generators get wrong
Ideogram's free image credits are weekly now, and conditional
Nearly every list still describes Ideogram's free plan as a daily credit grant. Its own comparison table, rendered today, puts one phrase in the free column under slow credits: "weekly for eligible accounts." Priority credits on free: a dash. Running and queued generations: 1. Private generations: a dash. Quality export: a dash.
Two hedges — weekly, and eligible — and no definition of eligible anywhere on the page. That is a materially different product from the one being recommended.
Leonardo's 150 images a day are real, and public
Leonardo publishes the most generous verifiable image number on this list: 150 fast tokens per day, with a token bank of 150. That part of the roundups is accurate, and it is the reason Leonardo tops most free image comparisons.
What those comparisons skip sits two rows down in the same table. Free plan, creations access: Public. Quality settings: Basic. Personal collections: 1. You get the daily tokens; the image goes in the shop window.
Recraft's free images are not your images
Worth quoting exactly, because paraphrase softens it. From Recraft's own pricing FAQ:
"Images generated on the Free plan are owned by Recraft. They are publicly visible in the community gallery and are not licensed for commercial use. For example, they cannot typically be listed on stock platforms, which require proof of ownership."
Owned by the vendor, published by default, commercially unusable. No free-image list we found mentions any of the three.
"Firefly gives you 25 image credits a month" is a number Adobe stopped printing
It was true once. It is not on the page. If a 2026 roundup of free AI image generators still quotes it, the author did not open the page — which tells you what to assume about the rest of that article.

Quota is the column every roundup compares, because it is the easy one. The column that decides whether you can actually use the image is this one, and it is almost never in the table.
Which free AI image generators to use for what
Most images per day, and you don't mind a public image: Leonardo, at 150 fast tokens daily on basic quality.
A published daily number from a newer tool: Krea, at 100 units per day.
An image you intend to sell, print, or put in a client deck: none of these free tiers clears that bar cleanly. Recraft rules it out in writing; Leonardo and Ideogram simply do not address it in the free column. Read the terms before you invoice anyone.
A free image with no account and no watermark: Kavel starts at 10 credits with no signup — five images on the free image engine — then 40 on signup and a daily check-in ladder worth 100 a week. Is there a free AI image generator with no watermark?
