Hit the Road Dude AI Meme: Origin, Lines and the Pet Version

The hit the road dude meme is a phone video of an older man in a white pickup running two fishermen off a pond: "State? This ain't no state property. This is private property. Hit the road dude." In October 2026 the AI remakes took it over, with cats and dogs in his driver's seat, and you can make your own from one photo of your pet.

What it is: a TikTok of a man in a white pickup telling two fishermen they are on private property, ending in a phone call where the owner says to "lock 'em up".
Why it is everywhere again: AI remakes put a cat, a dog or you in his seat, same truck, same lines.
Four ways to make one: restyle the original clip in Higgsfield, use a template app, paste a prompt into a video model, or start from one photo on the hit the road dude AI video page on Kavel.
Kavel route: one photo, three pet templates, a 12-second vertical clip; $9.99 buys that one clip with no subscription. Add the original sound in TikTok or Reels when you post.

What is the hit the road dude meme?

The hit the road dude meme is a short, shaky phone video filmed by someone fishing at a pond. A white-haired man pulls up in a white pickup, window down, and asks who told them they could fish there. The fisher says they thought it was state property. The man repeats "State?" in disbelief, tells them it is private property, sends them off with "Hit the road dude", and then takes a phone call in which the owner says to "lock 'em up". Know Your Meme files it under that last line, Lock 'Em Up.

The same clip travels under several names: the state property meme, the private property meme, "this ain't no state property", and the lock 'em up meme. They all point to one video.

Who posted the original?

The sources disagree, so here are both as we read them on 2026-10-14:

Source Says the original was posted by Plays they report
top5apps.ai guide (published 2026-09-30) @bird28thegr8, on 2025-08-21, as "Angry grandpa kicks me out my fishing spot" 20 million
getstarrd.app guide (published 2026-09-28) @hb_rell 7 million+

To find the original yourself, search TikTok for "angry grandpa kicks me out my fishing spot" or "hit the road dude original"; YouTube has several "original vs meme" side-by-sides. Tenor lists the GIF as "Hit The Road Dude Meme".

The clip itself does not say where the pond is, so "where is the lock 'em up guy from" has no public answer, and he is a private person who never asked to be famous. That is also why the remakes below swap him out instead of copying his face. Reposts often carry the hashtags #treytaylor and "crew tractor"; none of the pages we read ties either name to the man in the truck. We also found no public report that anyone was arrested or charged: "lock 'em up" is the punchline of the phone call, not something that happened on camera.

When did it go viral?

Twice. The original spread in late summer 2025, with lip-dub remixes within days and a GIF version on Tenor dated October 2025. The second wave is the AI one, versions where the driver is a cat, a dog or a cartoon. On 14 October our trend tracker counted 180 posts from 49+ accounts, 104 of them in the previous 72 hours, and Dude Perfect had posted their own take the evening before.

The full hit the road dude lines

Speaker Line In most AI remakes?
Driver "Who told you to fish here?" Often
Fisher "I thought it was state property." Yes, usually off-camera
Driver "State? This? State?" Yes, the punchline
Driver "This ain't no state property. This is private property." Yes
Driver "Hit the road dude." Yes
Driver "What is your name, man? I want your name." Pet versions act it out with a clipboard
Driver, on the phone The owner says to "lock 'em up". Sometimes, as the ending

Wording follows the transcript published on aimemevideos.com (checked 2026-10-14), which marks the name line as reported rather than certain. The YouTube comments under the reposts quote exactly these beats back: "STATE PRISON? Hit another prison dude, this aint no state prison", "who gave you perms?", "i thought it was state property". If people are asking you "what did he say", it is the table above.

"Hit the road dude" just means leave. The joke is the gap between how small the offence is (fishing in a pond) and how hard he takes it, and the "State?" repeated like the word itself is an insult.

Why the pet versions took over

The remakes that travel are pets behind the wheel. Three that went around this week:

  • The banana hat crew (@js1n5, TikTok): a grey cat in a banana costume hat leans out of the pickup, points down the road, then pulls out a clipboard to take your details while three cats in sunglasses watch from the back seat.
  • The Siamese in a bow tie (@nibsgoddess, TikTok): a wide-eyed Siamese gives the fishermen the stare from the driver's window, then writes down their name with a blue pen.
  • The pit bull in plaid (@flipthefeeed, Instagram): a grey pit bull in a plaid shirt and gold chain delivers the whole private property speech with one paw out of the window.

Hit the road dude AI cat: a grey cat in a yellow banana hat holds a pen over a clipboard at the window of a white pickup while cats in sunglasses sit in the back

Pets work because a cat already looks like it owns the pond. For other things your pet can do from one photo, see the AI pet video generator. The clipboard is the pet versions' answer to "what is your name, man?"

People also notice the voice. In a r/theboondocks thread about a cartoon-styled version, commenters scored it "looks 100, voice I give 65". One easy fix if you feel the same: post the remake with the original sound on top.

Hit the road dude AI video methods compared: Higgsfield Object Swap, Starrd, Viberot, Media.io and Kavel, with input, clip length, audio and listed price

Template apps have two sellers, so that way takes two rows. Pick by what you want:

  • You want the original man's exact voice baked into the file: a template app (Starrd or Viberot) says it adds the real audio for you.
  • You want the original scene frame for frame with someone else in it: Higgsfield Object Swap restyles the real clip, but you need the clip itself and some patience with retries.
  • You want your pet in a scene of its own, with templates already written: the Kavel page starts from one photo and gives you the banana hat crew, the Siamese and the pit bull as one-tap scenes, plus random ones (a goat in the truck bed, a parrot on the wheel, a grandma in pearls).

How to make a hit the road dude AI video from one photo

  1. Open the hit the road dude AI video page. It makes a 12-second vertical clip, ready to post.
  2. Upload one photo. Your dog, your cat or you, with the face clearly in the shot.
  3. Keep the pond scene or tap a template. The default runs the whole exchange at the pond. Tap the banana hat crew, the Siamese or the pit bull to copy that version.
  4. Generate. The button shows the credit cost before you press it.
  5. Post it with the sound. In TikTok or Reels, pick the hit the road dude sound and turn the clip's own audio down.

Hit the road dude AI Siamese cat: a Siamese in a pink bow tie leans over a clipboard on the steering wheel of a white pickup with a blue pen, a white cat beside it

The Siamese version, from @nibsgoddess on TikTok. It is one of the three templates on the page.

The hit the road dude AI prompt (copy it)

None of the creators behind the viral remakes published a prompt, so we wrote this one from the lines and the scene above. Paste it into any image-to-video model that takes a photo as the main character:

Use the photo as the main character and keep them exactly as photographed: the same face, fur or hair, colours, build and any clothes or accessories. They sit in the driver's seat of a plain white pickup truck parked on the grass bank of a quiet rural fishing pond in late afternoon light, one arm resting on the open window. Two young men with fishing rods stand by the water in front of the truck. Handheld phone footage from one of the fishermen, medium shot on the driver's window. (1) The character squints at them, outraged, and says "State? This ain't no state property. This is private property!"; (2) they point down the dirt road and say "Hit the road dude!"; (3) they hold a phone to their ear, listen for a beat, then turn back to the camera dead serious: "He said lock 'em up." A thick rural drawl, the mouth moving with every line. One continuous take, no cuts, vertical 9:16. Plain white pickup with no badge and no logos. No text, no captions, no watermark.

What to change:

  • For a dog or cat: add an outfit to make it read as the landowner, a plaid shirt and a gold chain, or a banana hat and a clipboard.
  • For a person: keep it as is; add "straw cowboy hat and a denim work shirt" for the farmer look.
  • For a bird: swap "sit in the driver's seat" for "perch on the steering wheel" and "says" for "squawks".

Photo tips and common problems

  • Use a photo where the face is clear and big. A close-up works fine; the truck window frames it anyway.
  • One subject per photo. Two pets in one photo make the model guess who is driving.
  • Use the original photo, not a screenshot. Screenshots carry interface bars and lose detail on fur.
  • Pet looks a little off? Try a photo taken at eye level, with the whole head in frame.
  • The original sound drifts from the mouth? Line up the beats: "State?" near the start, "hit the road dude" in the middle, the phone call at the end. That is the order the prompt follows.

FAQ

Is the hit the road dude video real or AI?

The original is real: a phone video of a man in a white pickup telling two fishermen they were on private property. The cats, dogs and cartoon characters you see in his seat now are AI remakes of it.

What does "state property" mean in the meme?

The fisher says he thought the pond was state property, public land rather than someone's private pond, so he figured fishing there was fine. The driver's "State?" is him not believing anyone could think that about his pond.

Did the hit the road dude guy get arrested?

We found no news report or court record of anyone being arrested or charged. "Lock 'em up" is what the owner says on the phone call at the end of the original clip, and the courtroom edits that followed are remixes built on that line.

Is the hit the road dude AI video free?

Not on Kavel: a 12-second clip on the hit the road dude AI video page costs 925 credits, which a $9.99 one-time purchase covers, and you see the cost before you generate.

Can I make it with my dog or cat?

Yes, pets are the most popular version. Upload one clear photo; the three templates on the page are a cat in a banana hat, a Siamese in a bow tie and a pit bull in plaid.

How do you say hit the road dude in Spanish?

There is no official Spanish version; these are remix captions. Spanish-language remakes on TikTok caption it "Agarra camino, amigo" ("get on the road, friend") and "el estado aquí?" for the "State?" line. In everyday Spanish the same brush-off would be "lárgate, amigo".

If you liked this one, the same one-photo approach drives the Smalltown Boy AI trend with two pets, and the "lock 'em up" ending has its own version in the AI arrest filter. For a cat that wants a bigger job, there is Knight Cat AI; for the whole back seat bopping in a row, Head Bop Animation; and to see your landowner pet as a person, Pet to Human. The clip itself runs on Seedance 2.0 Mini.

Put your pet in the pickup: one photo on the hit the road dude AI video page, 12 seconds, $9.99 for the clip.
