Most of the free AI photo editors you get recommended are renting the same handful of editing models, and those models cost between $0.004 and $0.41 per image — a spread of more than 100×. That number, not generosity, is what sets the daily cap before a photo editor asks for a card.
We priced 18 editing endpoints and could not find a free one. Google publishes $0.039 per image for Nano Banana and $0.134 for Nano Banana Pro, and lists no free allowance for image output. Which means a free tier's cap tells you which model tier you are on.
- Background removal ($0.010) and upscaling ($0.004–$0.08) are cheap enough that an uncapped free tier is sustainable.

Why a free AI photo editor is never free at the API

Each figure is public; the sheet is not. Google's Gemini API pricing lists $0.039 per image for Nano Banana and $0.134 per 1K/2K image for Nano Banana Pro, with no free allowance for image output. On fal.ai, GPT-Image-2 image-to-image runs from about $0.01 at low quality to $0.41 for a 4K high-quality edit. Recraft's background remover is $0.010; its crisp upscaler is $0.004.
On 2026-08-25 we sent schema-only requests — no generation, no billing — to 18 of these editing and upscaling endpoints. Seventeen answered with a field-validation error, meaning the id is live and the price is real. One, Black Forest Labs' flux1-kontext, returned "model name not supported" under every id we tried, so we have excluded it from the table rather than guess.
How to read a free tier's daily cap
- Uncapped free background removal costs the operator about a cent a click. Nothing about that offer is under pressure.
- Three free generative edits a day costs them roughly $0.09–$0.39 per visitor per day. That is an acquisition line item, and acquisition line items get reviewed.
- Uncapped flagship 4K editing is a deliberate subsidy. Enjoy it, but do not build a workflow on it.
Every free AI photo editor list has the same models underneath
The honest question is not which photo editor is best. It is which model, at which quality tier, does this photo editor route my image to?
Some vendors say so outright. Canva announced its Gemini Connected App at Google I/O on 19 May 2026, wiring Canva's Magic Layers directly to Google's Nano Banana model. The article currently ranking first for "best free AI photo editor" recommends a tool whose own page names its engines as Nano Banana, FLUX Kontext Pro and GPT Image 2.
So when two photo editor products feel different on the same prompt, an interface difference is rarely the whole story. One of them may simply be calling a first-generation endpoint at $0.039 while the other calls a second-generation one at $0.080. We measured what that difference buys.
We tested three of the models behind the free AI photo editor lists
On 2026-08-05 we took one source image and ran the same instructions through three endpoints.
The split was not the one the marketing implies. The line that predicted every result was whether the edit needs pixels the camera never captured.
Asked for a VHS look, the first-generation Nano Banana edit endpoint added grain and stopped there. Nano Banana 2 produced correct scanlines, chroma bleed and tracking error at 2400×1792, against the older endpoint's 1184×864. Double the price bought the effect instead of a gesture at it.
Asked to strip an effect, both repainted the pose and background rather than recovering what was underneath. GPT-Image-2 removed a filter convincingly and paid for it by re-drawing the subject — twice as a visibly different person.
What our test rules out
If the job is restoring a degraded photo, undoing a beauty filter, or recovering detail compression destroyed, none of the three could do it, and the reason generalises: the information is not in the file. Each one answered by generating a new photo of a similar-looking person. Our old photo restoration page calls this a re-imagining for exactly that reason.

Photoroom, remove.bg and Canva all sit here. This is the one class where a free photo editor can honestly say unlimited, so pick on edge quality with hair and glass rather than on quota.
One caution we hit while writing this. Photoroom's own pricing page today lists no permanent free plan at all, only trials — while third-party guides ranking for this query still describe a 250-export free tier. Published free quotas are the least reliable number in this category. They change quietly and the roundups do not recheck, which is why this photo editor comparison ranks by cost class instead.
Generative edits — pick a photo editor on a second-generation model
Adding a jacket, changing a hairstyle, moving a product onto a different surface. This is the class most people mean when they search for a free AI photo editor. The texture row above is the argument for paying the extra four cents. Below that tier you get grain where you asked for an effect.
Faces — budget for it
Identity-preserving edits sit near the top of the sheet, under only the 4K flagship tiers. If a photo editor hands you one instantly and for free, check whether the face that comes back is still the same face.
Upscaling — no photo editor should charge you much for this
At $0.004 to $0.08, upscaling is the cheapest useful thing on this page. A premium upscaler inside a photo editor subscription is usually the weakest value in the bundle.
